Philip Emde Soccer Fan Scarf
The art of Philip Emde is continuously under observation. Jocko, Putsi, or Coco are the names of the viewers (or are they strict critics?) of his works on paper, which do not leave the artworks alone at any time but sometimes merge with them into one.
Shimmering, abstract graphite surfaces full of individual wiping gestures form the non-objective antithesis to the drawn close-ups of the comprehensive collection of Steiff plush toys which can be found in the artist’s studio.
Emde declares the sometimes raddled, sometimes unused fluffy little friends to integral parts of his artworks, through which the viewers staying in front of the artworks can change their perspective. The constant companions and knights in shining armor of ones childhood become critic observers which react to the art in various ways: they concentrate and engage themselves with the works, they turn away horrified. Another time they seem to enthusiastically applaud or to be involved in vigorous discussions.
Through this, the artist creates a thoughtful balance between figuration and abstraction and playfully combines opposed elements of minimal art and gestural painting. The well balanced interplay in between explicit and implicit messages, impersonal image processing and individual interferences, and closeness and distance gets especially tangible, just like under a magnifying glass.
.Emdiland.. brings the studio of artist into the gallery and let the visitor become a double spectator. Thanks to Jocko, Lora, and Coco the viewer sees himself confronted with art though the eyes of his childhood.
