Around 9,000 Patients are currently waiting for an organ donation in Germany. Only 913 people donated organs in Germany in 2020. Statistically speaking, there are around ten organ donations for every million inhabitants. Because donors are missing, many patients still wait in vain for an organ donation and die. The association “Gegen den Tod” on the organ waiting list wants to change that and is bringing the fashion collection “Gegen den Tod Couture” onto the market together with eight hip streetwear designers.
The special feature: All items of clothing in the “Against Death Couture” capsule collection also serve as organ donation cards. The wearers of the clothes openly declare their intention to become organ donors after their death. The campaign “Against Death Couture” wants to make the topic of organ donation publicly visible again and advocates a new, open approach to one’s own mortality - especially among young people. The campaign has its main focus on the social Media under the hashtag #GegenDenTod.
The project takes advantage of the fact that there are no legal requirements in Germany as to what form an organ donor card should look like. This means that T-shirts, hoodies, jackets and other items of clothing can also be worn as organ donation cards. The only important thing is that the wearers sign the organ donation intention on their fashion pieces.
